Summer Fire

5/28/2019 (Permalink)

The weather is nice outside, and enables people surrounding the Portland area to get out and enjoy the sunlight. This could follow with camping trips and leisurely activities, such as enjoying campfires. However, what steps should be taken in order to see the summer is safe? Let's review a few things...

Oregon has undoubtedly seen some unfortunate forest fires, and irresponsible scenarios from negligence. It's important to remember these safety tips in order to have the safest, and best time possible:

Don't leave your campfire unattended: Sure, 30 minutes might not seem like a long time. However, it only takes a few undesirable seconds for a campfire to escape a safely made pit. Even if you feel confident about the fire containment, don't go for a prolonged period of time without extinguishing any fires in the wilderness.

Keep water near all campfires: This is something many don't think about... If the fire escapes the pit, what reaction will take place? Some might consider stomping out the flame. Others might try pouring water bottles to reduce the blaze. We encourage either having a gallon jug for the sole purpose of extinguishing the flames, or even bring along a small fire extinguisher for extra precaution.

BBQ Safely: Like campfires, any flames (even controlled) need to be monitored and attended to without negligence. Don't set up any BBQ's near dry wooded areas. Use good judgment when using charcoal grills, and dispose of any hot coals properly.

Fires and trees: Who doesn't love a big, comfortable fire? Bonfires are a ton of fun. But they are even harder to maintain compared to the conventional - small campfires that are usually within designated campsites. Just like the previous advice above, use diligence when enhancing the size of any fire you create. Always think of the "What if" scenarios, so you're that much more prepared!

We wish each and every person a safe and fun Summer! We hope this advice will help further the safety and all around experience. If you ever experience any home damage due to smoke or fire damage - then you can have the confidence that SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills will be there quickly, and to make things seem "Like it never even happened."

The Sciences Behind Drying Water Damage

5/22/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying?

The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess, and place a fan or two around the damaged area... SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills is trained to the science of drying and follow strict industry approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages!

If you're in Portland, or the surrounding areas and your business or personal home suffers water damage, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills Franchise Professionals will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.

  • Measure how much moisture is in wet material and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.

  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean?

A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material – but only if the air is indeed drier. The only problem is nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

For this reason, we are trained to the latest equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls and much more.

SERVPRO also uses state of the art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The bottom line?

Out of anyone in the Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Cedar Mill area... We contain the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

We are available to help 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Kitchens & Fire Hazards

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Aside from often being the hub of the home, the kitchen can be a warm, cozy place for family and friends to gather for a delicious meal and often quality time. However, danger can lurk in the kitchen. That danger is fire—and this is often the space where home fires start.

Fires that begin as a result of cooking are the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries, and the leading cause of these kitchen fires is unattended cooking.

In 2017, State Farm paid out over $130 million in homeowners insurance claims related to grease and other cooking fires. According to the insurance company, these are the worst states for kitchen fires:

  • North Carolina
  • Texas
  • Pennsylvania
  • California
  • Ohio
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • New York
  • Alabama
  • Georgia
Safety Tips for Cooking

Staying in the kitchen to keep watch over what is cooking is not the only fire safety tip you should be following. Let’s take a look at some other helpful tips to observe while cooking:

1. Watch out for your clothing. If you are wearing long, flowing sleeves or big, baggy clothing, it could catch on fire if you aren’t careful and it comes into contact with an open flame or a stove’s hot surface. It’s best to wear short or close-fitted sleeve shirts and make sure any baggy shirts are tucked in or tied back.

2. Watch the items that are placed around or on the stovetop. Kitchen towels, oven mitts, appliance cords or even curtains too close to the stovetop when cooking are quick to catch fire. Ideally, anything flammable needs to be moved away from it.

3. There needs to be a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen. Hopefully you have at least one fire extinguisher located in your home near your kitchen. Be sure that you know how to properly use the extinguisher, just in case it is ever needed.

4. Hot grease should not be thrown in the garbage can. While the grease may not be on fire, it may just be hot enough to cause something in the trash to ignite and burn. Let the grease cool for a while before disposing of it in an old coffee can. Also, know the “smoke point” temperatures of oils you cook with. Never subject a low-smoke point oil to high heat when cooking, as it could catch fire.

5. Create and establish an escape plan in the event of a fire. Who wants to thinks about worst-case scenarios? Nobody, but it’s better to be prepared should an emergency occur. Go over exit routes and designated meeting points with your family, making sure that everyone knows what to do.

Fire safety in the kitchen is an absolute necessity, as it can help prevent dangerous and destructive cooking fires. If your home has experienced damage from a cooking fire, know that SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/Oak Hills is here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

How flood water is classified

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

Not all water that causes damage is the same. There are three different types of water in a water damage situation, namely clean, gray and black. By having a better understanding of the differences in these types of water, you can then understand how to better handle the situation.

No matter what type of water is involved in a water damage situation, there is always going to be a cleanup and restoration process that must follow. First, and most important, is to remove all of the moisture and damp items quickly to hinder any mold growth because this is an ideal environment for mold to flourish.

This Is Clean Water

Much like its name states, clean water is just that—“clean”—and does not pose an immediate threat to your health. This water is free from contaminants and is the result of:

  • Broken water lines
  • Malfunctioning appliances
  • Toilet holding tanks
  • Snow melt and rainwater

This will be the easiest of the three types of water damage to work with, as there will be fewer microbes living in the water, but after only 48 hours and any contact with the surfaces of a building, clean water can move up to a category two water, which is gray water.

This Is Gray Water

Gray water begins to take water damage cleanup and restoration to a different level as it does become a bit more serious. This is water that could pose a health risk, due to it containing chemical or biological contamination. Because of the slight contamination in gray water, it means that it would need to be thoroughly treated before being safe to consume.

Gray water is water that can come from dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Again, the 48-hour exposure time will apply here as well, as gray water will turn into black water if not treated.

This Is Black Water

Now, black water is the most serious and dangerous of the three classifications and is considered highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter. This would include floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage is extremely contaminated with microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more—all of which are harmful to humans.

Some of the diseases that can be transmitted by black water are:

  • Cholera
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis
  • Gastroenteritis-type illnesses

Remember, when dealing with floodwater, it should be assumed that any water is black water since it picks up contaminants along its path.

Droughts and fire damage in Portland

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

Dry land and grass plains pose an increased fire hazard risk in the Portland Metro area.

We know that last year was really hot, and we don't anticipate anything less for this upcoming Summer. Some of our older blogs have included Summer Safety Tips, and we truly encourage that everyone has a fun and safe time!

However, one thing that could potentially be out of our control is the likelihood of a drought. Water becomes less abundant, therefore drying up plants and making grass go dry. The biggest concern from this, is the high risk of fires on land. Work with your family to develop a fire safety plan if some unfortunate scenario was to happen. This might include having a "safety meeting spot", and discussing what actions to take (including the call with 911).

Don't ever hesitate to reach out if you're in need of fire damage restoration services. We specialize in the process, and can help anyone with our services. This also includes document restoration, alongside smoke and soot removal!

Water Damage in the Workplace

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

When business owners visualize water damage, they often imagine a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.
However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage.

Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings:
Malfunctioning sprinkler systems

Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

Damaged appliances and equipment

This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

Broken pipes and plumbing

Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.
Backed up sewer lines

This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.
If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills will assist you on getting things up and running again.

Getting heated about Summer weather?

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

Last year, it was a very dry season in the Portland area. Some lakes were substantially below the usual water levels, and there was an unfortunate abundance of wildfires along the West Coast. The concern this year is having to face a repeat of another dry season. What are some potential things to be mindful of while enjoying the summer heat?

Be attentive to your barbecue!

You never know if somethings going wrong if you're not around to monitor. Whether you're on your own land, or at a park; it's important to be cognizant about what's happening around flames - no matter how much control you think you've got!

Don't litter your cigarettes!

It's important to keep in mind that the little things could create the biggest difference. One cherry from a cigarette is enough to spark a fire in dry conditions. Please extinguish your cigarettes/cigars with care.

Who doesn't love these joyful things around the 4th of July?

Even then, it's really crucial to be safe about these fun events. Just a couple years ago, Oregon suffered a drastic Eagle Creek fire caused by a fireworks, which destroyed approximately 50,000 acres of land.

We hope that each and every person can get a chance to enjoy the upcoming warm weather. But we highly encourage safety and care for your surroundings!

Summer 2019 Fire Risks and Tips

4/26/2019 (Permalink)

For those whom didn't know, Summer 2018 was the second hottest Summer in the Portland area throughout history. There was record reaching temperatures that reached over 100 degrees, and an unfortunate drought that caused stress on vegetation/bushes/trees. When the season gets to be this much of a scorcher, our number one concern derives from the risks of potential fires throughout the land. To prepare yourself for a fun, safe, and memorable Summer - We've put together some tips on how to keep things fun while under the sun, and reducing your risks of being a potential hazard:

  • When camping, don't leave campfires unattended without extinguishing. Even if you don't see flames, the hot coals may still be capable of igniting any flammable contents nearby.

  • Don't use open flames near wooded areas. Many apartments have policies against fire pits on balconies. But even for home owners - it's important to recognize that umbrellas, gazebos, and patio furniture could catch fire if left too close.

  • Throwing cigarette butts out the window. When a hot cherry is thrown from a window, the place where it lands could potentially be dry and catch fire easily. Be cognizant about your surroundings.

  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from any grilling area.

  • Keep a close eye on children with events containing fireworks.
  • Teach your children and loved ones the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" rule in case any mishap does occur.

We wish everyone a safe and happy time while out enjoying the sunny days. If you need any further fire tips, or come across damage that's potentially caused by smoke or fire - Inquire with us at (503) 619-6198!

How does water stains work?

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

Have you ever looked at your vehicle, and wondered what the science behind those little unfortunate water spots happens to be?

Well, water spots are most frequently created when hard water is left on a surface – paint or glass – to dry (technically, evaporate). This can be due to not drying your car after a wash, parking your car a little too close to a sprinkler, or even from rain water that is left on the surface too long. In a best case scenario, the minerals and dirt in the water are simply left on the surface of the paint after the water has evaporated off.

Things get worse if the water contains something corrosive that etches the surface as it sits, creating a “crater.” If not addressed, these craters can actually get worse over time, as water will pool in them and continue to etch the same spot.

Oftentimes, just taking the least aggressive surface cleaning product route will make it hassle-free, and wipe away the dirt and minerals that have become dried from sunlight. If this method doesn't work, some people have tried remedies such as clay - all the way to using a polisher. Regardless of the case, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills specializes in water damage. We have the products and professionals to ensure your mess goes away without any stress. Inquire with us if you happen to stumble across a bad case of water damage in your life!

Preparing for unpredictable Spring weather

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

Spring may bring us longer days and more sunshine, but unfortunately, the threat of severe weather throughout the country is also a result of the warmer temperatures. The weather may change at moment’s notice, which means you never know what you’re going to get.

Unstable temperatures are the cause for the changing weather. They can go from warm to cold even in the same day, and that temperature change can result in extreme weather changes as well.

Thunderstorms are increasingly common throughout the spring and are the main cause of severe weather. A thunderstorm occurs whenever warm, moist air collides with cool, dry air, which is most common in the spring and summer.

Natural catastrophe losses in the U.S. for 2017 show that severe thunderstorms were the most common and produced some of the costliest results. Out of 50 events, there were 85 fatalities and an estimated total of $25.4 billion in overall losses.

These storms can bring about the threat of flooding, high winds and even tornadoes if the conditions are right. It has been found that in modern history, 10% of all violent tornadoes have occurred in March, with April, May and June taking the top spots at 30%, 24% and 15% respectively.

Whether the severity of unpredictable Spring weather is minimal or extreme in the Cedar Hills area this year, you can count on SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills being there to take care of any damage you come across!

Storm Safety Tips: Tornadoes

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

Oregon doesn't receive an abundance of tornadoes, however, if you live in Oregon - we are making this blog if you do happen to ever come across the unfortunate scenario while traveling.

The first line of defense is knowing the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning. Watches are issued when the conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while warnings are issued when a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.

If a warning has been issued, you must take immediate action in seeking safe shelter, especially if you are in the tornado’s path.

Shelter options include:

  • Underground options like a basement or storm shelter.
  • The lowest part of your home, in an area that is away from outside walls, doors and windows. Interior closets and bathrooms can be ideal options.
  • If you are outside, try to get to a sturdy building. Mobile homes and trailers are not a safe option.
  • If on the road and no building access is available, do not get under an overpass or bridge. Instead, find a low, flat location and use your arms to protect your head and neck.

Your home shelter should have flashlights, a battery-powered weather radio and extra batteries.

DO NOT try to outrun the tornado if you are caught out on the road. Also, when you are taking shelter in your home, you can provide additional cover by using furniture items like couch cushions, mattresses or blankets to help keep your head and neck covered.

Tornadoes leave a path of destruction on the areas they touch down in. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning to potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

Emergency for any case is critical for surviving the worst disasters. For many States around the US, Spring poses as the most popular time for "tornado season". Stay safe - and stay alert! SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills will be around to help however we can!

Don't let the mold get too old...

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

How much do you know about microbial growth?

We see it frequently. In fact, we are so adamant about mold that we want to make sure everyone else knows what potential hazards microbial growth could cause. There's a life cycle that many are unaware of, and this article could possibly help you understand how it all works!

When an organic material, such as wood, gets an abundance of water exposure - it only takes between 24-72 hours for microbial growth to start developing. The key components for growth includes nutrients, temperature, light, aeration, pH and water activity.

The first stage is called hyphal growth, which is the stage where hyphae goes to obtaining it’s nutrition. The hyphae will grow into a mycelium, the main body of the fungus which is also the visible portion.

The second stage is called Spore formation. This is when spores grow on the end of hyphal cells.

The third stage is called Spore Dispersal. After the spores are formed, they are released into the air and carried elsewhere to begin the process of germination and growth all over again. Mold spores are highly resistant and durable. They can remain dormant for years in even hot and dry environments.

The final stage of the process is called Spore Germination. Once the spore is dispersed to a new area and when the optimal conditions exist, moisture and nutrient availability, the spore will begin to germinate into a new hyphael cell. The life cycle of mold then begins again.

If you suspect microbial growth is forming in your home, you can have the confidence that SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills will be there to fix the situation immediately!

What happens if you don't get water out of a flooded carpet?

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Spills happen, and most people would be inclined to take a towel to the affected carpet area to dry it up. However, if the spill involves an abundance of water - then this could escalate the situation to an even bigger problem.

After a flood or large spill, the affected area will absorb the moisture (water, soda, etc.), and spread throughout the fibers. Followed by this, it may start having microbial growth forming within the first 72 hours if left untreated. This could potentially create a foul odor, and risk of mold further spreading. Stains are another serious risk for carpets, and may seem next to impossible to remove. Don't risk your flooring over a spill - and have the confidence that SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills will take care of the situation without stress or hassle. We have the equipment and professionals to assist you on every step of the way!

Don't get caught up in the stress

One of our technicians finishing up his day after a major water loss job. Our SERVPRO vans are easily distinguished by the bright green color!

Regardless of the time of year, it's critical to make sure your home/business are well suited for any kind of disaster that strikes. We know that a flood will not only overtake a home, but it'll create a flood of emotions as well.

When you live in the PNW area, it's an even greater risk at having to deal with mold or water damage. The heavy months of rainfall will usually test the integrity of someones house, and it's not uncommon to have a chain of events when disaster strikes. What we mean by this, is that if water damage goes left untreated - it could potentially create even further damage with microbial growth. There's always something to be cautious about when it comes to preparing your property for the worst. That's why we have trained technicians who are ready for any job that you come across!

Smoke damage is a serious matter

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

When most people think of house fires, they consider the damage that the flames would cause. However, in most cases - A home fire will bring an abundance of smoke damage. Even a small fireplace is enough to produce enough smoke to damage an entire house. Recently, we've had more calls to help with the cleanup/restoration in some complexes. When this happens, we take diligent care using specialized products to remove both the odor, and the soot that managed to cling onto walls and materials. The products that we use are plant-based essential oils that are also environmentally friendly. If you happen to come across the unfortunate event of facing a house fire, don't hesitate to reach out to the SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills team to fix your situation!

How mold works

4/8/2019 (Permalink)

One of our technicians handling demolition due to water loss, and stumbling further upon microbial growth.

It's a nasty thing to have around your property, and ultimately it's a perfect recipe for more ongoing issues. Microbial growth. When people experience a water damage situation that doesn't get resolved immediately, every hour that goes by is just another step closer to having to deal with mold.

Other ways that microbial growth can enter a home is:

  • Flooding from surface waters (i.e., overflowing rivers) or from severe storms;

  • Roof leaks from damaged or missing roofing materials, ice dams or blocked gutters;

  • Storm-driven rain through window frames, exterior walls or door assemblies;

  • Leaking pipes, sewer back-ups or overflows;

  • Damp basements or crawl spaces due to a high water table or poorly managed rainwater drainage; and

  • Condensation on cold surfaces

Microbial growth is something that can't just get 'wiped away' or easily taken care of. If not treated properly, there's a substantial risk it'll appear soon again. That's why we highly encourage that any suspicion for mold should be addressed to SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills, because we offer free mold inspections and remediation services!

What dangers can a leaky roof cause?

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage causing microbial growth in a leaking attic.

When you own a home, you've most likely had a home inspection done prior. One of the most critically important things about the house is an integrity of the infrastructure, including the roof. So what potential hazards can happen if a leaking roof goes untreated?

Attic damage

Not only will the paint and interior be affected, but so will the belongings that's stowed inside your attic. There's a risk of bubbles forming, and plaster expansion.

Interior mildew and mold

Common and hard for home owners to resolve independently. It only takes 24-48 hours for microbial growth to develop under optimal conditions. Not all mold will pose a health risk - but it's still crucial to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Fire hazards

Hard to believe, isn't it?
However, it's not considered that the water intrusion can pose a threat from shortened wires. If there's a leak in the attic, be sure to turn off the electricity in that area until a professional can inspect.

Higher utility bills

Your cellulose or fiberglass insulation becomes saturated and it takes a long time for it to dry out. If a roof leak repair is put off for a long time, chronic water intrusion will deplete the insulation significantly and your home will lose hot and cool air, resulting in higher utility bills.

We hope these tips can provide useful information for you and your family. If you ever experience a leaking roof/water intrusion, please don't hesitate to reach out to SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills!

There hasn't been any structures affected by the fire, and the evacuations have been lifted. This is fantastic news for the surrounding communities, and a great reminder that fire safety is absolutely paramount during the warmer months this year. If you have any additional questions, or you're facing a situation with your home/business in terms of damage restoration... Please don't contact our team to inquire!

Water damage repercussions

3/20/2019 (Permalink)

Microbial growth forming after an appliance leak went unnoticed.

Water damage is a miserable thing. I think that's the bottom line when we talk about one of the worst things that could happen to a home in terms of home damage. But what implications happen after the damage is done?

Usually there's an abundance of drywall damage, if it's gone through an appliance. The water may sneak without notice, therefore causing further damage by microbial growth. It takes only 24-48 hours for mold to form. Following water damage, you may notice a musty odor coming from carpets as well. Without proper care, the microbial growth problem will just further expand. This is why it's absolutely paramount that water damage is restored immediately. The longer you wait - the worse it gets!

We want to be involved with the community

Things we've come across

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

Our number one goal is to make things seem "Like it never even happened". Our technicians strive to make things right, and the capabilities that we possess can prove invaluable to the Beaverton, Hillsboro, Cedar Mill, and Portland area.

It's been nicer weather lately in the Portland metro area, which means more sunlight and less rain. But even disaster doesn't stop with sunny days. Fire safety improvement

3/15/2019 (Permalink)

We always advise people to keep an additional fire extinguisher under your sink, just in case a fire happens unexpectedly!

Whether you live in Hillsboro, Portland, Beaverton, or the Cedar Hills area... One thing all these locations have in common is that all the homes in these towns possess fire extinguishers. Especially if you're living within an apartment complex, or condominium.

So if you're asking “how many fire extinguishers does my building need?”

The answer is: It depends.

Many factors play a role in determining the number, type, size and location of portable fire extinguishers you need to place to keep your building, employees, and customers safe and stay up to code.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), local codes, and OSHA have all prescribed requirements for the specific number of fire extinguishers that must be present in public buildings. Some factors that may affect these results may be:

  • Size and layout of the room
  • Fire hazard level of the building
  • Presence of flammable liquids
  • and stairwells.

Regardless of having a fire extinguisher in a nearby spot in your building, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills also advises to keep an additional fire extinguisher at all times underneath your kitchen sink. The reason is due to the amount of fires that are initially started in the kitchen... And every second counts!

If you need any further assistance or have questions about fire safety, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills is more than happy to help!

What mold holds the most dominance?

3/11/2019 (Permalink)

It's a legitimate question. There's a huge variety of mold types, and some actually hold the capability to dominate any other mold within the environment it's growing in.

Studies have actually shown that mold grows best when exposed to moisture for at least a week, or more. When its food source is low in nitrogen and high in cellulose, (organic materials) Black mold is happy… us and other molds, not so much.

Although different mold colonies will likely grow beforehand, once the black mold takes form, it will dominate the environment completely. This nightmarish fungi won't just go away on it's own either.  It can be dried up, and still remain alive and well. It’s true… Stachybotrys (black mold) and several other mold types can sit dormant for thousands of years until it gets wet, allowing new growth to take form.

For this reason, we strongly recommend calling in a professional remediation business that you can trust and make it seem "Like it never even happened." So if you are ever experiencing microbial growth in your residence, don't hesitate to call us at (503) 619-6198!

How does smoke damage work?

3/8/2019 (Permalink)

A house fire can be devastating and is something no home or business owner wants to experience. However, if a fire does occur in your home, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills can provide fire clean up services to help you recover from the damage. It's important to know exactly how and where fire damage can impact your home/business before the clean up process begins, especially since some areas of your property may have smoke damage that's not visible.

Unexpected Issues from Fire and Smoke Damage

After a fire, it's usually evident what smoke damage looks like in your home - whether it's charred items, discolored walls, or ash and soot on the floor - but it can also produce smells and other side effects that are harmful to surfaces. It's also important to note that some signs of smoke damage can occur immediately, while others are only apparent several hours - or even days - after the fire.

Shortly after a fire, the effects of smoke damage are visible on walls, ceilings and surfaces, appearing as stains and discoloration. Within a few days, walls and flooring may begin to turn yellow; however, this yellowing affect doesn't show right away. Plastic surfaces/appliances and wood can also become discolored and warped. Several hours after a fire, metal hardware can show signs of rust and corrosion.

Surfaces of your home, specifically fabric items, may not only show visible signs of fire damage, but also may contain a smoky odor. Smoke produces tiny particles of carbon in the air, and when deposited, these particles are called soot. Getting rid of the smoke residue, or soot, is the first step to reducing the smell of a fire.

The smell of smoke gets trapped in clothing, carpets, drapes and upholstered furniture, and unless these items are properly cleaned and deodorized by a professional fire clean up service, they may retain the smoky smell for a long period of time. The source of the odor can oftentimes be difficult to pinpoint. It could be in the soot on a surface, in the pores of wood or saturated in the finish of a piece of furniture.

Interior Damage

While smoke damage is visible on walls and ceilings, it can also permeate these surfaces and cause damage to a home's structure/framing, wall studs, insulation and air ducts in your ventilation system. When soot and smoke particles become trapped in the HVAC system, the smoke odor can reoccur periodically.

Electrical Damage
If any part of a home with wiring experiences fire damage, it usually means that the electrical system has been compromised. Depending on the source of the fire, any of the following electrical components may be damaged: wiring, cords, outlets, switches, fuses and breaker boxes. Appliances that have been affected by fire damage can show signs of corrosion, experience short circuits and malfunction, or fail completely.

No matter the level of destruction to your home, you should always consult SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills to access smoke or fire damage before you move forward with restoration and repairs. Our number one goal is to make things seem "Like it never even happened."

Emergency water damage services from SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills!

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

After storms blow through Oregon, the flooding often recedes quickly. The effects on condos, duplexes, and other homes can remain for weeks, however. If not cleaned or restored quickly, further damage can happen as well.

So why SERVPRO to remove water damage home? Our company trains each specialist to the standards required by our industry, we maintain an extensive, restoration equipment inventory, and can take the initial steps to return your home to its original condition.

Our first action to restoring a home is to remove everything that cannot be salvaged or repaired. In the case of flooding, floor trim and drywall panels can quickly absorb enough water to cause them to warp or crumble and dissolve in place.

Our SERVPRO team members then begin disinfecting and drying the home. Specialists spray any surface affected by the flooding with an anti-bacterial chemical and allow it to dry. Next, they clean each surface to remove soil, and other contaminants left by the receding water and allow them all to dry once again.

For space underneath the floors and behind the drywall, our teams use several devices to dry them for replacement quickly. Specialists use air movers to blow warm, dry air across damp surfaces to force out moisture trapped inside the wood. As the moisture evaporates, they install exhaust fans to draw out the damp air and direct it outside through the nearest window or door. If the inside humidity is very high, specialists may also install one or more dehumidifiers to remove water directly from the air.

Our goal at SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills is to restore each home to a clean, dry condition as quickly as possible. If you need us, call (503) 957-6367 today to get started. We are here for you to make things seem "Like it never even happened"!

How does bursting pipes work

2/27/2019 (Permalink)

The weather in the Beaverton area is still looking pretty snowy. We've gone over past blogs before how snowfall and rain will contribute to potential mold issues... But what other implications might happen that people don't think of when it's freezing outside?

Bursting pipes.

The general rule of thumb is that water freezes when temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit. However, when pipes are indoors.. It can be hard to dictate how cold the temperatures need to be in order for trouble.

With a reasonable amount of insulation, even pipes in an unheated area could take up to 6-hours to freeze. This means that the air temperature has to remain at 20° for about 6-hours before there's a risk of your pipes freezing. Nonetheless, it's important to stay in tune with the surrounding temperatures, and take extra care when it becomes freezing conditions. If you have any further questions or face an issue with bursting pipes/water damage, give SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/Oak Hills a call!

More about mold!

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

Ceilings with high humidity rooms pose an increased risk for microbial growth.

Have you ever wondered how long it would take a full room to grow in mold, considering it had optimal temperature and humidity?

Microbial growth (mold), is nothing to delay if it's seen in your home. It only takes 24-48 hours to generate and grow under ideal conditions. Typically, the spores begin to colonize in 3 to 12 days and become visible to the eye in about 18-21 days.

The concern for many is that mold will grow without any notice until it's too late. Once mold can be identified, it goes on to killing the bacteria using specialized solutions and equipment, then removing it permanently. There's a misconception that it can be simply cleaned and gone. It gets more complex than that. Give SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills a call if you need to have mold identification and remediation in your home!

Local areas are seeing snow!

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

Snow falling in the Cedar Hills area.

Out of the Winter months, it can be agreed that February was the worst in regards to weather. There's been weeks with continuous rainfall, and as of recently, there's been some snow that's been sticking around. This not only affects road conditions, but also the dwellings of individuals as well. Increased conditions with snow results in affected roofs, and potential hazards for flooding once the snow begins to melt.

Fortunately for the Beaverton, Cedar Hills, and Hillsboro area... The snow will reside throughout the day and be minimal in the remainder of the week. The unfortunate news, however, is the melted snow will truly test the roofing for many individuals that own a house. We post frequently about mold, and it could also create a domino effect into that issue as well if things aren't dried properly. Stay warm, and if there's any need for mold identification or water damage... SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills is open 24/7 to ensure your issues seem "Like it never even happened."

Weather still affects the Portland area

2/22/2019 (Permalink)

Whether you're from Beaverton, Hillsboro, or even Gresham... There's been some fluctuation in the weather lately. The PNW is still facing some storms, and that still keeps the risk up for being at higher risk in regards to property damage. Some of our greatest worries has been leaking roofs, flooded basements, and crawl spaces. People may underestimate the damage of what rainfall can do to a home. When a storm is near, it's always best to take extra precaution and prepare your property for even the worst. That's why they say "better safe than sorry!". If you, or someone you know is facing damage due to inclement weather, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills is open 24/7 to make sure your problems go away as soon as possible!

A professional water cleanup team knows how to prevent your house and contents from getting ruined

2/22/2019 (Permalink)

It only takes one of the many storms passing over the Portland area to create problems with your home's roof. After repairs, most homeowners never have a problem again. Sometimes, though, minor gaps that went undetected before now suddenly seem to open up and let rain from even mild showers into the house. Any part of your roof can develop problems like this.

When your home experiences water damage, the team at SERVPRO is ready to help. We can help determine where the leak is coming from so your roofing team can get the repairs made as quickly as possible. We use thermal imaging equipment that shows the presence of moisture in materials, letting us track down both lost and invasive water, revealing their origination points. While the top of your home requires experts in roofing, many times we can repair leaky pipes and slipped water lines.

After we locate the area where rain sneaks in, we can tarp this to eliminate problems until after the completion of the roof's repairs. Now we can begin working on cleaning up the water that came through your ceiling and is threatening your home and your belongings. Preventing as much ruination and damage to your property as possible is our goal in mitigation and cleanup.

Water that comes through your attic can carry debris with each drop and deposit these substances on your belongings. Attic spaces can also contain stored boxes of off-season items, and we can get these cleaned up for you, also. Disposing of things and repurchasing them often costs considerably more than the expense involved in cleaning and restoring those same items.

Furniture that sat under a leak can hold quite a bit of water in its upholstery. We use special vacuums that remove the water while protecting the fabric. Other items, such as solid wood furniture, can often come clean with only a thorough wipe-down to clean it sufficiently. We air dry these in a special chamber to speed drying up and then deodorize with either hydroxyl or ozone machines.

Carpeting in the area affected by an overhead leak often experiences water spread out several feet in each direction. We get carpets in such situations dry by floating them, which allows us to direct air both above and below them, rapidly drying them and the floor on which the carpet rests.

SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills is ready 24/7 to help families protect their property from invasive rain with our water cleanup services. Call us at (503) 619-6198, any time when you find your home's interior drenched.

How to prevent mold on patio furniture

2/22/2019 (Permalink)

If you’re hoping to save your current furniture or you’ve bought a new patio set and want to keep it from falling victim to the same problem, you can take steps to prevent mildew and mold. When purchasing new furniture, look for water-resistant fabrics and materials and check to see if the dyes used are also weather-resistant. Acrylic and polyester are usually the most durable. You can also waterproof your patio furniture yourself by purchasing a waterproofing kit at your local supply store.

Note that sunscreen and bug spray are known to soak into cushions, so always use a towel to sit on as added protection, and never sit down directly after coming out of the pool. If you do spill water or otherwise soil the furniture, clean it immediately, and do routine cleaning every few weeks. If you do not use your patio furniture year-round, consider using furniture covers, or find a shed, garage, or storage unit to house it during the off season.

Now that you know how to remove mold and mildew from patio furniture, you can clean up your chairs, table and umbrella to return it to good condition. You’ll be back to lounging out in the summer heat in no time. If you ever have any further questions about mold tips, contact us at (503) 619-6198!

How dryer vents can affect your business

1/18/2019 (Permalink)

Apartments pose an increased risk because of the high volume of units. If not maintained, there's a higher increased risk of fire!

One of the most common causes of fires in both apartments and homes, is also perhaps one of the most preventable.

Dryer vents connect from your clothes dryer, and can build up lint. If not cleaned out properly, the air cannot flow properly, and a fire can result. This type of fire happens most frequently in homes and apartments, posing dangers to adults and children.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year. These fires cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. The U.S. Fire Administration also reports that the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them (34 percent).

Apart from cleaning your dryer vent, the U.S. Fire Administration has suggestions to enhance safety when using your clothes dryer:

  • Don’t use a clothes dryer without a lint filter or with a lint filter that is loose, damaged or clogged.

  • Don’t overload the dryer.

  • Don’t use a wire screen or cloth to cover the wall damper. They can collect lint and clog the dryer vent.

  • Don’t dry anything containing foam, rubber or plastic. An example of an item not to place in a dryer is a bathroom rug with a rubber backing.

  • Don’t dry any item for which manufacturers' instructions state “dry away from heat.”

  • Don’t dry glass fiber materials (unless manufacturers' instructions allow).

  • Don’t dry items that have come into contact with anything flammable like alcohol, cooking oils or gasoline. Dry them outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, away from heat.

  • Don’t leave a clothes dryer running if you leave home or when you go to bed.

So whether you're a property manager of an apartment complex, or homeowner that's needing extra precautions... The bottom line here is to ensure a decreased risk of damage by keeping up with maintenance. At SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills, we also offer duct cleaning services to make sure people won't face this issue. If you do happen to experience this unfortunate event, always know that our goal is to make things seem "Like they never even happened."!

How can water affect you

1/18/2019 (Permalink)

A fire created a wide opening in this apartment ceiling. The rain water pooled on the floor, creating even further damage.

There's always a higher risk of flooding when you live in an area that's known for heavy rainfall. With heavy rains, it could potentially result in heavy damage. So what exactly should you do to make sure there's a decreased risk for water damage, and what could follow if not taken care of?

Always close your windows when you're away from home. If wind catches the rain, and it blows into a window - you'll not only have wet window seals and carpet, but also higher chances of dealing with microbial growth. It only takes between 24-48 hours for microbial growth to potentially form under optimal circumstances.

Alongside this, you're jeopardizing the things that the eye can't always catch. If you have hardwood floors that get wet, you'll also risk having warped flooring. This not only creates a hassle for homeowners, but it could possibly mean that sooner floor replacement is imminent.

If you are faced with any water damage, regardless of size, have the confidence that SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak hills possesses all the necessary equipment to keep your home safe from getting any worse!

Fire Safety Tips

1/16/2019 (Permalink)

Always check the batteries of your smoke alarms. Be sure to test them every month for your safety!

One of the most devastating things a family can face is the loss of a home due to fire. It's life changing, and potentially fatal if people aren't out in a timely manner. We at SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills can help you prepare the family for any future house fire emergency with these tips:

  1. Install the right number of smoke alarms: Check the batteries. Always do a smoke alarm test every month.

  2. Teach your children what smoke alarms sound like.

  3. Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.

  4. Establish a family emergency communication plan and ensure that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.

  5. Practice escaping from your home twice a year. Yell "Fire" to alert everyone to escape to the safe meeting location

  6. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1. Have your address written somewhere safe so children can help first responders in a timely manner.

  7. Teach family members to "stop, drop, and roll" in case their clothes should catch on fire.

These tips may help your family develop a safer setting in case of emergency. If this unfortunate event ever occurs to your home, you can have the confidence we'll be there 24/7 to help with your damage restoration needs.

Most common places to look for mold

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

A demonstrated example of how mold can sneak behind your refrigerator!

You know that mold is bad, ugly, and can be potentially dangerous. You also know, of course, that it should be removed immediately when it's found in your home. You might know what and how to look for any potential fungi spots. But where exactly should you be looking?

The 8 most common places for mold growth happens to be:

  1. Basements/Cellars that have been flooded

  2. Underneath Kitchen & Bathroom sinks

  3. Underneath or behind refrigerators

  4. Behind walls that also contain plumbing
  5. Damp or wet newspapers, or cardboard boxes

  6. Around air-conditioning units

  7. Around windows that leak

  8. Under carpeting that may have become wet

Nonetheless, it's important to occasionally investigate for any mold around the house. Especially when it's a season with high levels of rainfall.

Our technicians are professionally trained and equipped to ensure your mold issues diminish quickly and without hassle!

How dangerous is mold?

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

Stachybotrys Chartarum (black mold) is relatively rare, yet poses health risks to many.

Great question!

According to the CDC:

"Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all."

With that said, the most common indoor molds are cladosporium, penicillium, alternaria and aspergillus. Stachybotrys chartarum, often called toxic mold, is pretty rare to find.

But regardless of the health hazards that mold may pose, it's also a danger for homes in general. This includes a posed risk of wood rot, to terrible odors and stains. It only takes 24-48 hours in the right conditions for mold to form! So we advise anyone in this situation to neverlet it stand for too long.

If you need experts to assist in this case, we are available 24/7 to ensure the job is taken care of immediately!

How Much Time to Escape from a House Fire

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

A modern home that contains many synthetic materials can make a room engulfed within 3 minutes.

Destruction from house fires is absolutely devastating. We've gone over before how things such as Christmas trees can go up in flames within a matter of seconds. Another leading cause of house fires also contributes towards kitchen duties being left unattended. But how much time does someone need in order to escape a house fire safely?

Research has shown that 30 years ago, the average person would have about 17 minutes to safely escape a home. Nowadays, the time for someone to safely escape has lowered to a daring 3-4 minutes. The reason behind this is due to the materials that the home is made from. Older houses generally have real wood and natural materials, compared to newer properties which have been constructed with synthetic materials which catch fire even faster. The odds of facing a home fire may seem unlikely, but it's good to know these facts in case it ever happens to you. SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills also specializes in fire damage restoration. So if there's ever this situation in your life, you can feel assured that we've got your back!

Seasonal Storms in the Portland Area

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

The January, 2017 snowstorm ranked as one of the worst snowstorms in 20 years in Portland, Oregon.

It was about 2 years ago that Portland faced the impact of a full-blown ice storm. Some roads consisted of cars piled up by the numbers, while people helplessly roamed the streets in the snowy storm that covered all of the city. This was a terrible time for drivers and homeowners alike. News channels emphasized on the safety hazards of ice buildups on the sidewalks, and how you'll have to maintain your area to ensure a decreased risk of slipping hazards.

For many Oregonians, this was the worst the weather had become in many years. There was abundant home damages from the storm as well. Roofs were caving in, pipes were bursting, and the need for restoration was on a rise at that time. This year, we've been fortunate to not face those conditions. However, if something does unsuspectingly happen...you know who to call! We are open 24/7 to see that your home damages are "Like it never even happened."

Seasonal home damage with water

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

An apartment building caught fire, leading to more damage because of rainfall.

When it rains, it pours. At least that's what they say when things get really tough. We know that the Winter season is going to bring heavy rains and snow. Depending on where you live, the best thing to do is keep up to date with your house. If you notice the roofing is going bad, then be sure to get it replaced before anticipated heavy rainfall occurs.

We've seen some bad conditions when it comes to water damage, especially if it involves a fire. Many people may also not think much about fixing a small leak immediately. But it's just a matter of time until the little things make the biggest difference. If you happen to come across even a little water problem in your home, such as leaking or a flooded floor... You can rest assured that we'll make it seem "Like it never even happened."!

What threats does winter cause for your home?

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Example of a falling tree causing significant damage due to a winter storm.

In Oregon, we're fortunate to not have extreme weather like some parts of the Northeastern part of the US. However, there's still always a posed risk of snow and ice.

Direct damage concerns may include trees falling on homes, roof collapse due to snow accumulation, wind damage during a blizzard, displacement due to a major power outage, and frozen or burst pipes. Always try to stay thoughtful of your home condition before winter conditions arrive. This includes ensuring the gutters are cleared, and the siding of the home doesn't contain any significant damage.

Also note that freezing temperatures may create an ice dam. An ice dam occurs when snow on the roof melts, runs to the edge and refreezes there, forcing water back up under the roof where it can cause leaks and shingles deterioration.

At the same time, high winds, hail and winter storms can tear off shingles or drive moisture beneath them, causing further damage.

In any case this season, give SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills a call for any damage restoration needs. We've got the trained professionals and trusted service to ensure your damages will be mitigated quickly!

What are the odds of facing home damage?

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Example of some extreme water damage through a ceiling.

It's something every homeowner dreads... A leaking roof, frozen pipe, or even a broken washing machine hose. They are all procuring causes for water damage loss. So what's the odds of facing this?

According to the American Insurance Association, water damage has been one of the leading claims for rising issues that homeowners will face.

According to statistics:

  • Almost 40 percent of all homeowners have said that they have experienced loss from water damage.

  • About 93 percent of all water damage can be prevented.

  • Water damage is the second most frequently filed insurance claim in the United States.

  • 250 gallons of water is released a day due to a 1/8-inch crack in a pipe.

  • About 20 percent of all insurance claims related to water damage of some kind.

  • Billions of dollars in property losses are spent each year as a direct result of water damages.

These are things most people won't think about until it happens to them. We always encourage to work with your insurance company, and have some preparation in case you urgently need home restoration services.

At SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills, we will always have your back if this unfortunate occurrence happens. We understand the troubles that homeowners have to go through, and it's our #1 goal to ensure it seems "Like it never even happened"!

Tips to prevent house fires during the holidays

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

Warm fires are common. But be safe and vigilant!

The odds of facing a house fire is roughly 1 in 3000. With the holidays right around the corner, there will be an abundant amount of cooking and open flames to keep the house warm and cozy. We at SERVPRO of Cedar Mill have some wise advice for keeping safe, and decreasing those odds with these extra precautions:

The leading cause for house fires is by cooking, or lack of attention while in session. It's easy to get distracted with kids and family while the pans are frying and oven is heating. Set timers and keep vigiliant about the location so you'll know when the food is ready. Always keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and functioning smoke detector.

The incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December than during other months. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas/Christmas Eve and New Year’s/New Year’s Eve.

We highly recommend ensuring candles are blown out before leaving a residence, even if it's for a short period of time. It's the little sparks that can create a major blaze.

Christmas trees

It takes 30 seconds for a dry tree to go up in flames. No matter how watered the tree is, it'll take about 4 weeks for it to become dry regardless. Be sure to place the tree away from any heating source, such as space heaters and baseboard heaters.

If you need any more advice or help with home restoration services, give us a call at (503) 619-6198!

Don't get scammed by "storm chasers"

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

One of our vehicles ready to deploy 24/7.
  1. Too-good-to-be-true prices. Often dubious restoration companies will offer low prices to grab your attention, but be wary of surprise costs that will hurt your wallet. Never let the price of the repairs be the sole criterion for choosing a restoration firm.
  2. Requesting upfront cash payments. While it can be a regular practice to deposit up to one-third of the estimated price on the day repairs begin, avoid paying in cash or more than the expected payment. Pay by check or credit card, and pay the final amount only after the work is finished and you are happy with the quality of the repairs.
  3. A lack of references. References are easy to check and can help you quickly identify if the company is legitimate and provides good service. Research the company online and check feedback on user-review sites such as Angie’s List or Yelp, or ask friends or business contacts if they have had any experience with the firm.
  4. High-pressure tactics. Often a “storm chaser” will arrive uninvited to your door peddling their services. If the contractor is using high-pressure sales tactics, it is best to turn them away politely and shut the door. Technicians should be courteous, thoroughly explain the scope of work and answer all questions. You should never feel pressure to accept their services.
  5. Lack of training. Professional cleaning and restoration firms require management and employees to engage in formal training in a variety of cleaning and restoration disciplines, and these educational efforts will be ongoing. Inquire about the formal training and certifications of technicians who will be working in your home or business. Look for organizations that require their technicians to hold certifications from organizations like the IICRC to ensure the work is done correctly.
  6. Inability to show credentials. Never hesitate to ask for proof. Ask to see the individual’s certification card, business license and insurance certificate. To verify a company, you can contact the IICRC which is a not-for-profit standards-setting and credentialing body for the inspection, cleaning and restoration industry. Call the IICRC at 1-844-464-4272 to confirm the certification of any company that has contacted you. You can also go to https://www.IICRC.org/IICRCFirmLocator to locate a qualified cleaning and restoration firm in your area. Immediately after a storm, a home or business owner should contact their insurance provider for a storm damage assessment by an adjuster.

You can go with SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills with the highest amount of confidence that we have our professional training and necessary certifications to get the job done. We always strive to make it "Like it never even happened."

5 Tips to pick the perfect water damage restoration company

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

Always ensure there's proper water damage restoration equipment!

Sometimes it can be tricky to find the best suitable service for your emergency water damage restoration. However, these quick tips may save you a hassle and bring complete satisfaction!

Tip #1: Make sure the company is licensed and insured with a valid certificate of insurance. If there's no credentials that seem valid, beware that the accident may fall on the homeowner.

Tip #2: Timely responses are crucial for mitigating issues. Unqualified services may hold to be a liability more than help. The lack of speedy service may warrant more damage - which may cost the homeowner more money.

Tip #3: Equipment is detrimental for ensuring the job is done right! Do they use proper Electronic Moisture Detectors and thermal imaging cameras to confirm the damaged areas? Be sure to pay attention to the equipment they use for the service.

Tip #4: Will they work with your insurance provider? They'll need to know how to work with an adjuster to breakdown the charges and assist with the claim.

Tip #5: Do they use proper drying equipment? They'll need to know how to monitor and place this equipment, as well as record the reduction of reduced relative humidity from your home.

Our experts at SERVPRO know how to do water dry outs, repair and restoration, and we focus on helping our clients quickly to remove the water before bigger issues arise. Don't ever hesitate to reach us at (503) 619-6198!

Tips to prepare your home for fall

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Pretty to look at, but not how you want your gutters to stay.

Is your home ready for fall and the rain that will inevitably come with it? This week we at SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills would like to talk about leak and water damage prevention. Did you know that 2018 became the hottest year on record for Portland as of August 22? That is to say it’s had the largest number of days over 90 degrees. No matter how you feel about it there is no doubt we’ve had a very dry summer, and while there is no end in sight currently, there are things you can do right now to make sure you are prepared for when the rain finally does return.

A great place to start is with your roof. An improperly maintained roof can be a major, often preventable source of water damage in a home. When is the last time you had your roof inspected? It’s recommended you visually inspect your roof twice a year; once as you head into fall, and again in spring. There is no substitute for having a professional conduct the inspection, but you can check for certain signs yourself. You’ll want to look for uneven or sagging spots, damaged or missing shingles, moss and algae growth, damaged or missing chimney caps, damaged or rusted flashings, damaged sealant around fixtures, and damage to gutters.

Speaking of gutters, you should check to make sure they are clean and clear as well, and that your gutter system has proper drainage at the downspouts. While checking your gutters, look for grit from the shingles, an excessive amount could also indicate a problem. You’ll want to make sure that all water draining from any downspouts moves away from the foundation of your home, as water backing up against the foundation can cause damage and possibly flood crawlspaces and basements.

These are only a few preventative measures, but if done regularly they could keep small issues from becoming big problems. If you suspect that water may be getting in to your home, SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills has the training and equipment to check crawlspaces and attics for moisture and help you determine the source. Call us at (503) 619-6198 and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

The Fire at Withers Lumber

8/24/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills was on the scene next day to help clean up damage from a fire.

During a Parade back on July 4th, Withers Lumber found themselves in a bit of a pickle. An SUV in their parking lot had started smoking due to an electrical issue, and was quickly engulfed in flames. The next day, they called SERVPRO Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills, and we loaded up the truck and headed right over!

The building hadn’t sustained much damage other than the windows being blown out, but the fire had caused a layer of soot to settle on the parking lot and front of the building. We pressure washed and cleaned that up, while also taking care of the glass and debri cause by the explosion. Our technicians removed some damaged insulation, and then cleaned up the ceiling grid.

If you have soot or smoke damage in your home, don’t hesitate to call us! We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills to assist in California wildfire recovery efforts!

8/16/2018 (Permalink)

This is the kind of color change you want to see in the forest, not a wildfire disaster.

Wildfires are a yearly, often tragic reality in the West Coast states. While we in the Portland metropolitan area have been very fortunate in this regard, it is easy for us to empathize with those now facing loss from the historically large fires devastating parts of California. We at SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills feel just as strongly about this, and we want to help.

This is why SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills is now preparing to send a crew of technicians down to California in the coming weeks to assist in the recovery and restoration effort. Due to the close proximity of large population centers, there has been loss or damage to nearly 2,000 structures so far. We at SERVPRO are confident that our team will be able to make a difference to some of the home and business owners affected by this tragedy.

SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills is always standing by locally to respond if you have a water or fire emergency. Call us at (503) 619-6198 and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

But with the growth of our company could come with a few downsides. 6/1/2018 (Permalink)

Baking for a cause is a team effort!

Food, a basic human need. For those who have no trouble obtaining food, the true meaning of the word “starving” rarely comes into play. More than 41 million Americans suffer from lack of food, and of those 41 millions, 13 million of them are children.

Children need sustenance to do well in school, without it they won’t be able to focus and have the proper mindset to succeed. The No Kid Hungry program is working to eradicate the hunger problem that is blanketing America. They are pushing for breakfast and afterschool meal to be included in school, providing support the children’s families ways to keep healthy and nutritious food in the house, and offering a summer meal program so that children in America won’t go hungry again.

This may seem as though the program is far from reach, but with the support that everyone can offer, we move one step closer to a better tomorrow! So here at SERVPRO Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills, we are putting our support in the No Kid Hungry program by doing a bake sale for our community to come enjoy and help further the cause, and all proceeds go directly to the foundation. So join us from 11am-3pm at the Somerset Swim Center in Cedar Mill on June 9th to help us make our community a better place. RSVP on Facebook for more info!

Leakage in your roof could lead to leakage in your wallet

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Call us now!

Now that the rainy weather has mostly gone away, it’s a good time to check for leakages in your roof and make sure that there won’t be any water damage in your attic. There a many steps that you could make in order to prevent water damage from happening to your attic:

Look for any leaks

Check for any signs of water damage, like discoloration or mold growth. The angle in which two roofs meet could be prone to leaks and cracks, and there could also be leaks in the attic plumbing stacks

If your roof is completely closed off from any chance of ventilation, the moisture in the attic could potentially create a bigger problem than you would ever want. Especially during winter, with the heater making the warm air rises to the attic, the condensation of the heat will stick on the cold surfaces of the attic, and if there isn’t any ventilation then damage could slowly arise.

To prevent the condensation from sticking to the walls of the roof, then insulation could be one of the most important step in controlling the temperature level in your attic. Make sure the insulation is in good condition, thick, soft, and dry to have the best results.

Outside vent for appliances

Make sure that your appliances aren’t redirecting straight into the attic but rather be redirected outside so moisture won’t be accumulating in your attic.

If you find water damage in your home, then give us a call as soon as possible so we could limit the damage that it’s doing to your home. Just call (503) 619 6198

Tips to Mitigating Mold in Cedar Mill!

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Don't let mold get to you and your home!

As we’ve mentioned in previous posts mold can certainly be dangerous and costly to remove and remediate. One of the best things to prevent having to get mold remediation services is to prevent the mold in the first place. There are mold spores all over the place and they will love to grow if you let them. Mold especially likes to grow in humid climates like Portland, Cedar Mill, Hillsboro, and Beaverton. Below are some quick tips for preventing mold damage in your home, office or building.

1. Detect and remedy mold friendly areas.
While you can’t eliminate mold completely you can help prevent it by making it challenging for mold to thrive. Mold likes to grow in damp, dark places so you can check your home or office for challenged spots where mold may grow.

  • Check the basement for flooding
  • Check around the house after a big rain to ensure there are no leaks
  • Check the ceiling for water stains indicating a leak
  • Check your gutters

2. Don’t leave wet spots or wet items.
Mold needs moisture to grow so don’t give it a chance to. If you have some flooding from a storm, a spill on the carpet or water from a leaky pipe, dry the area promptly. Failure to dry the area properly will result in mold growth. Be sure not leave wet items such as towels or clothes in a pile or in the washer, this can lead to mold and bacteria growth as well.

3. Prevent moisture and excess humidity with proper ventilation and air flow.
Ensure that humidity levels are low and there is proper ventilation. Ensuring there is proper ventilation in the shower, laundry room, attic or basement can help to ensure that it’s not humid for mold to grow. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers go a long way to remove the extra moisture in the air but even running a fan or opening a window can help get the circulation to prevent mold growth.

4. Ensure to have roof gutters in good working condition.
Mold can easily be caused by damaged gutters that result in a leak. Ensure your gutters are cleaned regularly and inspected for damage. Gutters play an important part of keeping your home in good shape and protected from the rain.

5. Use mold resistant items when possible.
It should be no surprise that if you utilize mold resistant items when possible then chance of having mold problems decreases immensely. There are many mold resistant products including:

  • Mold Resistant Paint
  • Mold Resistant Wood
  • Mold Resistant Shower Curtains
  • Mold Resistant Bath Mat
  • and more

If you do end up having a mold problem that you are unsure what is causing it or how to rid it you may want to call in a professional to come and assess the scene. SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills can check out your mold situation and remediate the situation as well as restore any damage caused by the mold.

The ERP (Emergency Readiness Program) is a program that is designed to teach children and adults all about what to do in case of an emergency. Do you know what to do in case of a fire? What about a flood situation, during an earthquake, or in the event of a tornado? The list of potential emergencies goes on and we can prepare you for any of them! The event will have a plethora of activities and refreshments to keep everyone entertained while they hear my owner talk about the program.

You can take pictures with me, Birdy the Fire Dog, in my firefighter outfit! There will be tables where you can get your face painted so you can look like me or a cat if you prefer, but that’s less cool. There will be goodie bags (that might have treats in there for me, probably not but dog can dream). There will be door prizes and free ERP giveaways. So what are you waiting for? Get Ready Cedar Mill, Spring Storms Are Here!

4/23/2018 (Permalink)

Don't let this be you!

Are you prepared? Here's a few tips to get you and your home ready for possible storm damage, and ways to keep your family safe!

1. Remove Dead Wood.

Trimming your trees regularly will help fewer branches fall in heavy wind or other severe weather. For particularly tall trees, experts can do the trimming for you and can also tell you when trees are at risk of being blown over in a storm so they can be removed.

2. Secure Outdoor Items.

Loose items like grills, picnic tables, and lawn furniture should be brought inside to avoid becoming projectiles in storms with high winds. Decorations, even when they are securely attached to the home, could also cause damage or be destroyed in the storm.

3. Deal with Drainage Problems.

Having the gutters cleaned once leaves have fallen should be a given, but there can be other drainage problems around your home, including areas where water can drain onto the foundation and damage it. Landscaping professionals can help you identify the problems and find solutions so that you don’t have any issues when the storms come.

4. Inspect Roof Periodically.

A brand new roof should withstand most severe weather, but if your roof is 5-10 years old or older, it should be checked for loose shingles, nails and sheathing. Not only can shingles blow off in a storm, but loose nails and sheathing can cause chunks of roofing to be dislodged or create openings for rain and ice to penetrate.

If an inspection does turn up any possible leaks, getting them fixed right away will protect your home from damage in severe weather. Roofs that are over 15 years old risk sudden deterioration or failure in storm situations even if no problems are apparent.

5. Consider Impact-Rated Windows.

You may be able to protect your windows from damage by installing hurricane shutters, or just boarding up the windows if a severe storm is imminent. The fact is, though, that any new windows are likely to be more airtight and impervious to leaks and damage than older windows.

SERVPRO of Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills can help you prepare your home to withstand storm damage, and if the worst does happen, we can help you repair the damage and get your home looking better than new. Call us at (503) 619-6198 to schedule your  free estimate.

Ride Along Job

Richie arriving at the client's house

Today I went along with Richie one of our technician into the field to see what it is, exactly, that he does for his job. We arrived at the client’s home, came inside their house to inspect what is the source of the problem is. The client gave us the run down of what the people from Dr. Crawlspace had relay to her, Richie listened and diagnosed the problem after he checked under the kitchen sink. When it doesn’t seem like there is any dripping coming from the sink, Richie determined that the problem lies underneath the house.

We then move to the crawlspace of the house to check for any kind of moisture, wetness, or mold. Richie went down there to brave the darkness and coldness by himself as I stood upstairs to make sure I can get to him if he gets stuck in the crawlspace.

After about ten to fifteen minutes, Richie resurfaced and had found the source of the problem. There seems to be a broken pipe that is continuously shooting water everywhere. There are puddles in various places, he tried shutting off one of the main valve but nothing happened, and unfortunately he also spotted mold in spots. After showing pictures of what he had found, and explaining what happened to the client, he proceed to talk about the procedure that needs to happen next in order for him to restore their house into its former glory. First and foremost, he needs to shut off the water for the entire house, then he can go back into the crawlspace and dry out as much water as he can, after that a plumber can come in and fix the pipe, and then after all of that is done, Richie can begin his process in fixing the client’s house.

It was such a great opportunity for me to ride along with Richie and learn about what he does so I have a better understanding of what it is SERVPRO’s services do. Thank you for the awesome learning experience!

Basket of delectable Easter Eggs!

Happy Easter to one and all, hope everyone have had a wonderful time over this weekend to spend with their family and friends. We here at SERVPRO Cedar Mill have enjoyed spending time with our friends and family this weekend scavenge for eggs, tasting delicious homemade meals, and just appreciating the company of our love ones.

This past week, I got the chance to visit one of the local church near us just before Easter. They are the most quaint, and friendly church that I have ever got the pleasure of visiting. The Bethany Presbyterian Church welcomed me with open arms as I walk passed the doors. This Sunday, the church will be having their Easter Service as per usual, talking about how Jesus rises from the grave after three days. It was a miracle and miraculous that He risen, dying for our sins, and delivered us from evil. The service will be very educational and motivational as usual, and we hope that they have a successful sermon from their pastor. Definitely a place worth stopping by for Easter Sunday!

Happy National Puppy Day! Hope everyone’s week is ter-RUFF-ic.

3/22/2018 (Permalink)

Happy Puppy Day!

For this year’s puppy day, we are looking at a couple of our local animal shelters to see their efforts in tending and caring to the animal’s needs. These shelters have been a safe haven for various types of animal throughout the years, and we would like to shine a spotlight on their hard work and dedication in finding the animals a safe place to live.

Founded in 1988, Jonnie Hart has funding from the Portland Miniature Schnauzer club to help find new home for Schnauzers. Although one misconception is that they only take miniature Schnauzers, the organization actually take Schnauzers of all sizes. They are a non-profit organization that have been running by volunteers in the past 25 years, operating out of foster homes scattered throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.  In the earlier years, with the local effort they placed about twelves dogs per year, and then the internet appeared. The exposure gave them a chance to relocate up to 58 dogs in 1995. Now, they place about twenty to fifty dogs annually.

Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter has staff that cared for about 4000 stray, abandoned and neglected animals just last year. They are open six days a week to the public, and feed and care for animals 365 days a year. If you turn in a lost animal to them, they try their hardest to find its home. Last year alone, they helped reunited over 1200 dogs and cats to their families. If the animal’s parents doesn’t want them anymore, the shelter works their hardest with other local shelters and rescues in Oregon to find a suitable home for the animals.

So for this National Puppy Day, we’d like to celebrate all the furry friends that are in your lives, as well as ours. May their amazing personalities continue to warm our hearts and spice up our lives. If you don’t have that special furry friend in your lives, why not come down to one of your local shelters and finally adopting that one true friend that you have been missing in your life.

For more information, go check out their websites.

Tips on how to protect your house from storms, hurricanes and tornadoes

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Prevent your house from looking like this.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, away from the coast, one rarely see or hear about a wind storm that could go up to an EF5 (Enhanced Fujita scale), but the few wind storms that did hit a few years back left the affected houses in pieces. For future protections against wind storms, here are some ways that you can prepare your house for what's to come:

  1. Take inventory of your supplies
  2. Make sure your house has doors that can withstand some beating.
  3. Fortify your garage door.
  4. Strengthen your roof.
  5. Shutter your windows.
  6. Pin down your home
  7. Take shelter from the storm

Although the likelihood of an EF5 storm is low, it is always good to be prepare for when an actual wind storm hits.

Empower young women to lead!

It may be difficult to see the link between Girl Scout Cookies and entrepreneurship, but the cookie program is the largest girl-led business in the world. Annually they sell over 200 million boxes of cookies, earning over $800 million dollars. Even more than dollars though, the Girl Scout who sells you these cookies is developing confidence, learning to set goals, manage money, and study business ethics. The digital platform for sales that launched in 2014, allowed girls to market and sell cookies online or through a digital app.

As this piece developed, girls are able to customize their websites and collect data related to their cookie sales. If you are wondering if these skills translate into real-life skills as adults, take note that Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube and Virginia Rometti, the CEO of IBM are both former Girl Scouts.

How Do I Know If I Have A Mold Problem?

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills for a Mold Inspection Today!

Essentially, if there is mold growth or a moisture problem, then you have or are likely to have a mold problem. It really is as simple as this: "If there has not been a water problem, then there is no mold problem."

However, determining if there is or has been a moisture problem can sometimes be difficult, especially if people are worried about past water problems that may have been intentionally covered up, as in the case of the sale or rental of a home, or if the leak may have occurred within a wall cavity or other difficult to directly inspect.

How Do I Prevent A Mold Problem?

The number one thing to do is prevent water problems and quickly clean up and fix any water problems that arise. Mold needs water to survive. This is why you don't see mold growing on saltine crackers or croutons; they are too dry. So if you have a leak, fix it. The trickier problems involve resolving condensation that may take place in basements or bathrooms. In these cases, you may need dehumidifiers or other measures to eliminate the moisture problem. SERVPRO Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills has the experience and equipment to help you out!

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

Our drying equipment is top of the line! Call today for an inspection.
When working on home remodeling projects, we know that water can be one of the most damaging elementsfor your home. Water damage can be costly and time-consuming. It’s important to take care of the problem right away to avoid making the problem worse or making a new problem.

What You Can Do…

Look out for the signs of a roof leak, a damaged water heater or a plumbing problem so you can take care of the issue right away.

  1. Ceilings & Walls – Watch for changes of color or soft spots in your ceiling and walls. These may be signs of a roof leaking.
  2. Eaves – Keep your rain gutters clean and clear of leaves and other debris. Rainwater can damage eaves if the water gets trapped.
  3. Kitchen & Bathrooms – Check for dampness in your kitchen and bathroom cabinets and look for water leaking at plumbing joints.
  4. Grout & Caulking – If your grout or caulking is cracking this means you do not have a water tight seal.
  5. Mold – Some mold in high humidity areas, like your bathroom, can be a common occurrence. Have a specialist come out and look at the area.

Whatever you do, have your water damage problem taken care of before it becomes an even bigger problem. SERVPRO Cedar Mill/ Oak Hills is a leader in water damage restoration & mold remediation, and can respond quickly to your needs.

How To Prepare Your Family For a House Fire

2/21/2018 (Permalink)

Make sure your family is ready!
  • Call your local fire department or volunteer rescue organization to schedule an in-home visit. Most communities offer fire prevention training as a free service to residents. Firefighters can offer suggestions for coming up with the safest route possible out of your home, check your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, and point out potential fire hazards.
  • Identify two ways out of every room. This helps to avoid panic if one path is too dangerous to follow.
  • Create a simple, efficient route. The idea is to get out of the house as quickly as possible – a small fire can become an out-of-control blaze in less than 30 seconds.
  • Practice fire drills with your family and everyone who regularly cares for your children. Practice leaving the house with your eyes closed or a blindfold on – fire starts with a bright flame but quickly fills the house with black smoke and complete darkness.
  • If you live in a house that has two or more stories, buy a portable escape ladder that can be lowered out a window. Make sure it's tested by a nationally reputable laboratory (such as Underwriters Laboratory), and show everyone where ladder is kept and how it works.
  • If you live in an apartment building, don't include elevators in your evacuation plan because they can easily malfunction or get stuck between floors.
  • Teach your children that if they get trapped in their room, they should lie on the floor close to their bed. That's where firefighters will look for them.
  • Designate a meeting place – a safe spot outside the house where everyone can gather and be accounted for.

Are your pipes at risk of freezing?

We are going to go through another bout of cold temperatures here on in Cedar Mill this week.

Here are a few signs that your pipes have frozen:

Temps Are Below Freezing - Pipes cannot freeze if it is not cold enough outside for them to do so. Freezing is defined as 32° Fahrenheit.

Look For Frost on the Pipes - For pipes that can actively be seen, such as those under sinks, you may be able to see frost that has accumulated on the exterior of the pipe.

Very Low Water pressure Or No Water At All - Another sign that you may have a frozen pipe on your hands is lack of running water.

Foul Smells - A fourth potential sign of a blocked pipe is an odd smell coming from a faucet or drain.

Tips To Help You Beat Mold In Your Home This Winter!

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

Mold caused by storm damage, here at SERVPRO Cedar Mill, we're ready to tackle it!

Just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods when it comes to mold. Mold is still alive, even in freezing temperatures.

How Does Mold Continue To Thrive In Winter?

Mold needs moisture and darkness to proliferate, and winter is primarily wet and dark. It is one of the best times of year for fungi to grow and multiply.

During winter, we tend to close up our homes when it gets colder, and a tightly sealed, warm home lends itself to mold growth, especially in wet or moist areas with improper ventilation.

Mold growth in winter is not only relegated to inside the home. The outdoors has its own special blend of circumstances for mold to thrive—most notable of which is dead plant matter. When leaves fall and plants die, the decaying plant matter releases mold spores in the air.

Can Mold Live In Freezing Temperatures?

Surprisingly, yes. Even in freezing temperatures (below 32° Fahrenheit), mold is still a living organism. Mold spores can survive very extreme environmental conditions. They lie dormant in extreme cold, but at the hint of a thaw, they will grow once again, outdoors or even in your freezer. Low, or freezing, temperatures do NOT kill mold—even if it lies dormant for an extended period of time.

Mold will come back as soon as conditions are right for it do so. All spores need are moisture, a bit of heat, and “food” (organic material that contains carbon atoms) in order to grow. That is all it takes. Within 24-48 hours of a thaw, mold spores start to multiply.

How Do You Prevent Mold (Or Get Rid Of It) In Winter Months?

The same way you do any other time of the year—fix any known leaks, dry out the moisture in your home, clean the mold affected areas and remove and dispose of items that can’t be cleaned.

Fungi thrives on quick-to-decompose items such as books, piles of loose papers, or boxes of clothing. If you’re storing those things long-term, pick an area away from external walls or windows that invite condensation.

If you are concerned about the possible health risks associated with handling mold or that your home might be damaged during the cleanup process, call us here at SERVPRO with any questions you may have.

Clearing Out Smoke Damage In Your Oak Hills Home

1/4/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke damage stinks for everyone!

You’re relieved that the fire damage was minimal but shocked to find that the smoke damage is extensive.

It is easy to forget about the destructive power of smoke but we are quickly reminded of it by the horrible odor that is filling your home. The smoky pollutant irritates your eyes and airways, while the sticky residue on scorched walls and the layer of ashes begin to corrode your personal possessions.

The urgency to clear out the smoke sets in as you realize that although the flames did not reach far, the smoke did massive damage. Smoke and ashes travel through doors and vents, reaching your entire home, penetrating your carpet, drapes, and furniture with the odor of smoke.

Even the paint on the wall is not safe! Microscopic molecules of smoke embed deep into the pores and crevices of almost anything.

As you can see, a simple opening of windows, a wipe down with a household cleaner, and the passage of time will not be enough to fix this sort of smoke damage.

So call SERVPRO to come and put your life back together quickly and professionally. (503) 619-6198

What To Do When Your Pipes Burst In Oak Hills

12/21/2017 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO to clean up the water damage right away!

When water pipes freeze, the water expands, which can cause the pipes to burst and allow the thawed water to leak.

A burst water pipe can cause serious damage to your Oak Hills home and furnishings.

Knowing what to do in the event of a burst water pipe can limit the damage. Here are some tips:

  • Turn off the water at the main stop tap as soon as you notice a leak. You can usually find it under the kitchen sink where the service pipe comes in, so make sure you know where it is in case of emergency.
  • If you have a cold water tank, turn off the stopcock.
  • Drain the cold water system by turning on all your cold taps.
  • Turn off any water heating system, such as central heating or immersion heaters, and then drain the hot water system by turning on the hot taps.
  • Switch off the electrical mains if you think the water may have leaked near your electrics or electrical appliances. However, if the mains switch is wet DO NOT TOUCH IT.
  • Call a plumber to fix the leaking water pipe.
  • Call an electrician if you think your electrical wiring may have been damaged by the water. Never underestimate the dangers associated with electricity, especially when mixed with water!
  • A burst pipe can be particularly dangerous if water leaks through for some time before you notice. In that case, the water may have caused structural damage that could result in collapsed ceilings or weakened walls. If the ceiling is bulging, be careful because it may not be safe.

If you do experience a water damage because of a pipe burst call SERVPRO right away! 503.619.6198

We will paint your commercial building for you!

Some things you can get the cheaper brand with but exterior paint is not one of them. Trying to go cheap and save yourself money now will cost you more in having to redo the painting sooner than you needed to.

Exposed Pipes Can Freeze

11/2/2017 (Permalink)

That being said there are still areas that have bad freezes in basements around the Portland area also plumbing pipes in areas, like an attic, crawl space, and garage, are often at risk of freezing.

In most cases, you can most likely get away with just using some foam insulating pipe covers but if you have had pipes break in the past due to freezing you might want to beef up your efforts. If you are really worried about it and want an extra bit of protection you can wrap your pipes in heat tape, which activates when temperatures drop.

If you do happen to have a pipe burst and cause water damage please give SERVPRO a call (503) 619-6198!

How Do I Get The Smoke Smell Out Of My Portland Home?

9/26/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke belongs by the campfire not in your home!

It happens to the best of us right. In the kitchen cooking your favorite dish, someone knocks on the door or the phone rings so you go answer it.  You walk back in the room and your stove is on fire! Smoke rolls through the house, the alarm is blaring but luckily you're a quick thinker. You reach for the fire extinguisher and put it out before there is too much damage.

Even if there is not much fire damage in a situation like this many times you have to deal with the smoke smell that lingers long after in your house.

This week on our SERVPRO blog feed we are going to provide you with some quick tips on how to get the smell of smoke out of your house.

Things You'll Need

·         Baking Soda

·         Vinegar and Water Solution

·         Heavy duty washing detergent

1.      Throw open the windows and even a door or two as quickly as possible after the fire. The less time the smoke sits around the greater chance of getting rid of it quickly. Even if it is in the middle of winter, airing your house right away will disperse the smoke and prevent any more absorption. If the weather is nice, you might want to keep the windows open for a few days, at least during the daylight hours.

2.     Launder your drapes and table linens as soon as possible; they will absorb the smoke odor rapidly. Wash them in the hottest water that the fabric can endure and heavy duty washing detergent. If the fabrics cannot be washed at home, take them to a dry cleaner, which will have solutions that will make the fabric smoke-free.

3.      Clean your cabinets, walls, and floors with a one-part vinegar, one part warm water solution. Be sure to test this first but most surfaces are fine with this solution. Vinegar naturally absorbs odors so the smell of vinegar and smoke should go away in a few hours after using it.

4.      Place bowls of baking soda around your kitchen, and even put a few inside the cabinets, pantry, and any other room that has an odor.  This too will help to absorb the odor in a few days time. Sprinkle the rugs and carpeting with baking soda and vacuum. Sprinkle the baking soda again and this time let sit for a few days time before vacuuming.

If the house still smells of smoke or if you don’t want to do the work in the first place, just call us here at SERVPRO of Cedar Mill / Oak Hills and we’ll get it right out.

Never Use Bleach To Kill Mold

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

Mold has many colors and shapes.
Why You Should Never Use Bleach To Clean Mold

For many households, chlorine bleach is generally seen as your “go-to” cleaner for tough jobs. Mold removal does requires a heavy duty cleaner, but recently, many of the hazards of bleach are gaining more media attention causing people to take a closer look at the way they clean.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) was one of the first federal agencies to STOP recommending the use of liquid bleach for mold remediation. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has since edited their “A brief guide to mold and moisture and your home” to exclude their once suggested use of bleach as a means to kill mold.

So what actually is mold? Let’s go over the basics to get a better understanding of how it works and how it should be properly treated.

According to scientists, mold is a type of fungi that is neither plant nor animal. This basically means, unlike plants, it cannot derive energy from the sun or actively “hunt” for food like an animal. Therefore, mold must be opportunistic to survive. In order to reproduce, it regularly sends microscopic spores into the air searching for a suitable environment to live. It only needs a few requirements to survive: water, warm temperatures and a food source. Once it has located the perfect environment, it can begin to grow remarkably fast, sometimes within 24 hours! This is why we often see a mold bloom after flooding, water damage and undetected burst pipes etc…

So now that we know how it works, how do we properly treat it? Big bleach labels have promised you that nothing else will do the job like bleach. Chlorine bleach is most well known for it disinfecting properties but that doesn't mean it's the best choice for mold. It’s main function is to disinfect and to, well, bleach or change the color. But after use, what usually happens? The moldy color looks like it’s gone but within a week or two the mold usually comes back and sometimes worse! Most homeowners don’t put together that it’s the bleach causing this reaction and not a really bad case of mold. The fact remains that if the mold is not removed from the material, it will most likely always return.

Does Bleach kill mold?

Yes, but it comes with a catch. Bleach labels will warn you that chlorine bleach will only be effective on a “hard, non-porous surface.’’ This basically means that chlorine bleach is not made to “soak in.” Therefore, its disinfecting properties are limited to a hard surface like tile or glass. So here’s the problem: To ensure survival, mold spores spread its roots (Mycelia) deep into a porous surface. Mold remediation requires a cleaner to reach deep down into wood and other porous building materials to remove or "pull out" the roots. The properties of bleach prevent it from soaking into these materials. The surface mold looks gone (it's bleached white) but the internal mold always remains to grow back.

Another issue: Bleach contains 90% water and mold LOVES water. When bleach is applied, the chlorine quickly evaporates after use leaving behind A LOT of water. This water often soaks into the porous surface allowing the mold to flourish and re-grow in this moist environment. So in effect, using bleach actually feeds the internal mold spores! Although the surface may look bleached and clean, the remaining spores will root deeper, stronger and will often return worse than before.

"This chemical is considered hazardous by the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.  Sodium Hypochlorite (Chlorine Bleach) MSDS requires handlers in FULL Personal protection gear including respirators."

Bleach and mold. A few facts to remember:

  • In some cases, bleach will encourage toxic mold to grow where it was not present before.
  • Bleach will only remove the green stain from mold. The surface will appear clean but internal roots will continue to grow.
  • OSHA and the EPA have specifically advised against the use of bleach for mold remediation. See link below*
  • Chlorine bleach is caustic and extremely harmful to wood and many other surfaces. If bleach is used on wood, it will weaken the wood by breaking down its fibers. This can create further problems with the structural integrity of the home.
  • When bleach is mixed with ammonia it creates a deadly gas! *Remember, Urine contains ammonia! Using bleach in the toilet could also create a toxic gas.
  • Bleach itself is considered a toxic chemical and is classified the same as gasoline.
  • In its gaseous form (room temperature) chlorine releases Dioxins, a known cancer causing compound.
  • Bleach is highly corrosive to skin. Exposure to bare skin creates a hydrolysis reaction. This means the “oily” feeling is actually the top layer of your skin beginning to dissolve!
  • Bleach is not only hazardous to your health, it will make your mold problem worse in the long run.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  •  Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Winter Snow Storm Cause Major Damages

What is an Ice Dam?

Last winter we had one of the worst winter storms possible here in the Portland Metro area.  Roads were solid ice, it took most of us MANY hours just to get home from work even when we left early!  Trees or limbs down, vehicles all over the roadways, people stuck in their homes for days, many inches of snow all over the area.  What about the damages we don't see?

We all love icicles on roofs, it has such a fun look, a real "wintry" look to it.  What about what it can possible do to your roof?  Here is some information that has been gathered from a Nationwide Insurance website:

Ice dams. These icicles on your roof may appear harmless – and may even look pretty – but they can cause damage to your home. Here’s what you need to know about ice dam prevention and ice dam removal to help protect your home.

What is an ice dam?

An ice dam is a wall of ice that forms at the edge of the roof, typically at the gutters or soffit, and prevents melting snow from draining off.

What causes ice dams?

For an ice dam to form, 3 things must be present:

  1. Snow on the roof

  2. Higher portions of the roof’s external surface must be above 32°F

  3. Lower surfaces must be below 32°F

When these factors are in play, snow will melt and the water will flow down the roof and eventually freeze – forming an ice dam.

Poor ventilation and temperature control in the attic can also lead to ice dams. Excessive warm air in the attic can cause the snow on the roof to melt regardless of the temperature outside. Recessed lighting, skylights, complex roof designs and heating ducts in the attic can all increase the chances of an ice dam developing.

Do icicles mean that you have an ice dam?

In short, no. It’s common for small icicles to form; the larger, thicker icicles are the culprits. When you notice the larger icicles, it’s important to act fast in order to prevent damage.

What are the signs that you have an ice dam?

These are the most common, according to the Ice Dam Company:

  1. Your home has a history of ice dams

  2. Icicles form on the edge of the roof or off the front edge of the gutter

  3. Ice is coming through the soffit

  4. Ice is forming behind the gutters

  5. Water or ice appears on the exterior wall

  6. Water is seeping through a door frame or window

What type of damage can ice dams cause?

If not addressed early, ice dams can cause significant damage. Here’s how:

  • Water from melting snow can seep into your house and into walls, ceilings, insulation and other interior areas.

  • Ice dams can lift roof shingles up, allowing water to leak inside your home.

  • Pressure and weight from the dams can pull off gutters and lead to structural damage that can cause flooding.

  • If attic insulation gets wet, it can become ineffective, plus mold can develop.

How to prevent ice dams:

Properly winterizing your roof is the best way to prevent ice dams. Consider these precautions.

  • Have your gutters cleaned before winter.

  • Keep your attic well ventilated, so it stays cold, and properly ventilate the roof and eaves.

  • Insulate the attic floor to reduce the amount of heat rising from within the house.

  • Rake or shovel snow off the roof before it freezes or hire a professional roofer to clear your roof.

  • Create an air barrier between the house and attic with a foil-faced cover over an uninsulated attic hatch or whole-house fan opening.

  • Install a water-repellent roof membrane.

  • Check for any potentially dangerous heat sources, including uninsulated recessed ceiling can lights, uninsulated folding attic stair openings, heating ducts, furnace or water-heating equipment and inadequate bathroom vent fans.

How to remove ice dams:

If an ice dam has formed, here are immediate steps you can take to help prevent further damage.

  • Apply calcium chloride or another ice-melting product onto the ice.

  • Place a box fan in the attic and direct it at the underside of the roof where water is leaking in. The cold air will freeze the water.

  • If your roof is flat or has a low slope, use a roof rake to sweep off the snow.

  • Have a professional remove the dam with high-pressure steam or other specialized methods.
